After-School program

Vulnerable children in Nepal don't have access to the educational and comprehensive support they need to thrive. SuMa’s After-School program (ASP) aims to change that.

SuMa ASP students are intelligent, curious and full of potential. They also lack access to a strong education, healthy meals, and medical and mental health support—building blocks for long-term success. Many live in orphanages and/or are experiencing extreme poverty.

The After-School Program strives to fill the gaps and meet these critically important needs so that our students are able to beat the odds and build their own pathways out of poverty.

Take a look into what we are doing to support SuMa students in the Academic, Physical Health, and Mental Health spaces.

While rote memorization is the standard in most Nepali schools, SuMa ASP takes a progressive approach to education—one that is focused on experiential learning and real-life problem solving to build creative and critical-thinking skills. We focus on STEM literacy, coupled with art and music, to improve educational outcomes and create life-long learners.

We don’t just focus on building healthy minds, we also focus on building healthy bodies

Every student receives a daily meal (often their most nutritious meal of the day); bi-annual dental and medical checkups, including all needed medication and vaccinations; regular hygiene lessons and supplies; and daily recreational exercise to promote health and well-being.

Mental Health

Chronic and acute trauma, anxiety, depression are just some of the challenges our students are working to overcome. To support them on their journey, our mental health therapist provides our students with individual and group therapy, while our teachers work to provide a safe, stable, and supportive environment for every student.

STEM projects have always been my keen interest but sadly, my school doesn’t provide us with those projects. Ever since I joined ASP, I am encouraged and motivated to sharpen my own interests and follow my passion by developing new skills. I am so grateful to the team for considering our STEM knowledge even during the Pandemic.

My Teacher says food is necessary for a healthy state of body and mind. I am loving the nourishing nutrition received from Sunsar Maya. I feel eager to see variations in nutrients every single time.

My parents were not aware that I required a checkup until we came to the health campground held by Sunsar Maya. It was detected that I have a vitamin deficit so now the doctor has provided me with the proper medicine and I’m feeling better!
