Laputi’s Incredible News

When Laputi first joined Sunsar Maya’s Women’s Literacy program she could barely identify her letters and was unable to do simple math problems. Today, not only is she excelling in math, she is reading and writing in both Nepali and English. And the most incredible news… Laputi opened her own business - a small retail shop where she sells clothes, shoes, and everyday necessities.

Rising Star: Karan Wins “Aspiring Next Generation Award”

In February 2020, Karan won the “Aspiring Next Generation Award” at the Spiralogics Spirathon 2020. Karan beat out 15 finalists from across Nepal with his presentation of STEM projects and video tutorials he created at SuMa After-School. Karan received a year of mentorship from Spirologics to develop computer applications and serves as an inspiration to students in Sunsar Maya and across Nepal!

New Program: Women’s Councils in SuMa Communities

In August 2020, Sunsar Maya launched Women’s Councils in both Sunsar Maya communities. The goal of the Councils is to build the leadership skills of women in impoverished communities while providing a platform for members to identify the barriers impeding the success of women and girls in their neighborhoods, and the solutions to address those challenges.

We are forever grateful to Ellen McNally for founding SuMa Women’s Councils and her unwavering support of women and girls in Nepal and around the world.
