Teacher Training
SuMa Teacher Training was launched in 2018 to better provide students in rural Nepal with access to educational enrichment that improves their long-term educational and economic outcomes.
SuMa Teacher Training brings Sunsar Mayas’ progressive education methods to remote areas of Nepal.
Children in rural Nepal generally complete less than half the years of schooling than their urban counterparts, largely due to extreme poverty and lack of access to quality education. Students are taught by rote memorization, often in bare mud-floor classrooms without relevant materials or resources. In contrast, students that learn to think critically and creatively have better academic outcomes and are more likely to pursue advanced education and enjoy greater employment opportunities.
We leverage our experienced educators and proven curriculum to give rural teachers the skills and knowledge they need to implement project-based and experiential learning in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) concepts in their classrooms. Following intensive training, our team conducts regular check-ins with teachers, provides in-person classroom observations and feedback, and concludes the program with follow-up training to reinforce key practices.
Some important facts:
To ensure comprehensive support of educators and long-term impact in classrooms, we focus our training on one cohort of schools in a specific geographic area at a time.
We provide two days of intensive training, ongoing support through group chats, in-person classroom observations, and follow-up training sessions.
In 2019, SuMa Teacher Training trained 110 teachers, impacting 13,500 students. We track impact and outcomes through teacher observations and evaluations.
